The Kite Beaches of Providenciales

Look below for a map.

Grace Bay/Kitebeach

Grace Bay beach is a 7 mile long stretch of powdered white sand. With many fancy resorts it is the most popular beach with the tourists. But it is never really very crowded. In the winter months (November to February) it is the most popular beach with the local kiteboarders. In the winter the wind is normally side on and the average wind is 15 to 25 knots. The normal size kites for that time of year is 9 and 12 meter. About a mile off-shore there is a reef where you can kitesurf the waves. But because of the coral and itbeing far off-shore it is not for beginners and a boat is a neccssity.

Leeward

The Leeward kiteboarding spot is at the eastern tip of Providenciales. The point is called Emerald Point and it is right next to the Leeward Going Through where you can find some nice little waves. Across from Emerald Point is Little Water Cay.It is the home of many Rock Iguanas. Next to Little Water Cay is a big mangrove island and on the other side some neat flat water. When kiting at this spot beware of boats and the sometimes strong current. I once almost got sucked out to sea. It was not an experience I would want to do again.

Long Bay

Long Bay with it's beautiful light blue waters and soft sand is a kiteboader's dream. It is the summer kiting spot, being that in the summer it is normally off-shore on Grace Bay beach. With normally only about 8 to 14 knot winds and with some rare days of 15 to 20 knots, a 16metre kite is a necessity Long Bay is a safe place to kite, being you watch out for the conch shells in the water and on some places on the beach. The normal wind is on-shore with some side-on winds.

Turtle Tail

After a long drive down a long dusty dirt road you will come to a small little cove. When the tide is up the water in the cove is about 1 1/2 feet deep. When low tide the water can be as low as 5 inches. So no big jumps in there! In the cove the wind is gusty, but when you get out of the cove and in the deeper waters of the Caicos Banks the wind gets a lot better and there are some really cool swells and a couple of neat islands.
